Resources to help residents get informed about REAL ID

Beginning Oct. 1, Michigan residents will need to present a REAL ID-compliant document to fly within the United States and enter certain federal facilities under federal law. This new federal standard, “REAL ID,” is a security compliant measure that sets a higher standard for identification-both driver’s licenses and state identification card. Michigan Secretary of State offices now offer REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards, which are marked with a gold circle with a star inside. The star indicates the license or ID is REAL ID compliant. Enhanced licenses and enhanced state IDs that don’t have a star are already REAL ID compliant (and will be printed with the star when renewed or replaced). Currently, only 47 percent of Michigan driver’s licenses are REAL ID-compliant. To help spread the word on REAL ID, the state has provided resources for townships to share with residents:
